Awards

The Birmingham-Southern Alumni Association honors alumni of exceptional merit with the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. The awards are presented annually during Reunion Weekend. Additional information regarding nomination criteria and forms follow.

Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Awards are the highest recognition granted by the National Alumni Association. All alumni of Birmingham-Southern College, except former recipients of the award or recipients of honorary degrees, are eligible. Each spring, two to three awards, are presented at the Alumni Awards Luncheon during Reunion Weekend. (Click here for listing of former recipients.)

Any member of the Alumni Association may submit nominations. Those wishing to make nominations should submit complete biographical information, which includes the nominee's name, address, telephone number, and data that responds to the four primary areas of qualification:

  1. Interest in Birmingham-Southern College and its programs and promotion. Support may include the guidance of students to the college, involvement in volunteer programs and services of the college, and contributions to the financial resources of the college.
  2. Community service and leadership that the nominee has made to his/her city, state or nation.
  3. Achievements in the nominee's chosen career, profession, or other life work.
  4. Any other contributions that reflect credit upon Birmingham-Southern College and the education that it provided to the nominee.

Deadline for Nominations - Friday, Apri 15, 2011.

Once nominated, a name will be considered for a total of three years. After that time, a nominee may be renominated.

A committee consisting of those who have received the Distinguished Alumni Award during the preceding 10 years serve on the selection committee.


Outstanding Young Alumni Award

Purpose

The Outstanding Young Alumni Awards seek to recognize alumni whose achievements distinguish them from their peers in their professional and/or philanthropic careers. The awards, which began in 2004, are presented annually at the Alumni Awards Luncheon held during Reunion Weekend. (Click here for listing of former recipients.)

Qualifications for Consideration:

Candidates must

  • be nominated by a member of the Birmingham-Southern alumni, faculty, or staff;
  • be Birmingham-Southern College alumni who are 43 years old or less and who graduated no more than 20 years ago;
  • demonstrate an outstanding record of achievement in their professional and/or philanthropic careers; and
  • demonstrate a continuing loyalty, support, and/or advocacy for Birmingham-Southern College.

Selection
Two honorees are selected each year for the Outstanding Young Alumni Awards. In exceptional instances, three honorees may be named at the selection committee's discretion.

Selection Committee
The selection committee is appointed by the president of the alumni association from members of the alumni board and/or former recipients of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
